Running in

Hi,

I've done 800 of the 1000 running in miles, in a MY05 WRX, mostly around town. I've hardly used 5th gear so thought about doing 150 or so motorway miles to run that in.

I've read about not doing all the running in miles on the motorway but can't see a problem with doing some. Is there anything I'm missing? :?

I'm having fun but do feel the car is being hamstrung by me following the Subura rules! It's just yearning for me to floor it.

Still even at 4000 revs it's as fast or faster than some of the previous cars I've driven such as a Vectra V6, a Saab 2.0t and my folk's Volvo 940SE Turbo (all automatics oddly enough).

A week on Wednesday is the 1,000 mile service so I just have to wait until then...

The Subaru garage I'm getting the 1,000 mile service done at 'thinks' they use Castrol GTX Magnatec for their oil but I've read Scoobies don't like Castrol so was planning on buying some better oil for them to use.

The MY05 manual says 5w-30 is preferred for turbo models but that 5w-40 and 10w-40 are also acceptable. Now I've read from the mod forum that 5w is too thin. :?

Quote:
Castrol RS 10/60, Motul M300v 15/50, Mobil 1 15/50, Shell Helix plus 10/40 and Silkolene ProS 10/50 are the usual suspects (this is not a definitive list). DO NOT USE 0W or 5W as it is too thin
This leaves me with a choice of 10w-40 and, er, 10w-40. I'm thinking Motul M300v CHRONO 10w-40 or Shell Helix Plus 10w-40.

Can anyone recommend a shop (online or highstreet) to buy these from other than Halfords?

TIA!

Personally I'd use semi-synth for the next service, then move to fully synth at 10000 miles, when the engine should be fully loosened up.
