My new turbo :-)
Finally got round to fitting my new turbo today, the stock TD04 was coming off and a nice VF28 to be going on.
First off, if I knew how hard this job was going to be I would have got someone else to do it but thats too late :? The most usefull thing I used was a set of helfrauds ramps to get the old girl up in the air, a good set of spanners is a must as to is a good socket set and some vinyl gloves. Up the ramp she went, off came the intercooler, then the turbo heatsheild, got under the car and unbolted the downpipe from the centre section, sprayed all the bolts on the turbo with plus gas, unbolted the downpipe from the turbo, disconnected lambda sensor, removed downpipe from car. Next job was to get the turbo off, took off water feeds from turbo, unbolted the 3 x 14mm bolts holding it down, undone and removed the jubilee clip on the intake hose, took off boost hoses and loosened the oil feed bolt to the block, at this point disaster struck, I dropped the copper washer for the oil feed banjo into the engine under-tray and spent 20 mins hunting it down and fishing it out with a piece of wire. Back on track.....The problem now was lifting the turbo out and and disconnecting the oil drain at the bottom of the turbo, a slag of a job!! Gave the turbo a good tug and the oil pipe popped off after some choice words Got the turbo off and offered then up, the VF turbo came with an oil drain pipe for a TD05 so I had to swap the one from the TD04 as it was the correct length and then had the problem of the gasket being shafted as I split the pipe from the turbo, I had already bought a new gasket for a lotus elise as subaru dont sell these seperate, fitted new gasket but the bolt holes were slightly offset so out came the needle file and all was well again. Fitting the VF......... plonked it in there but It was clear that the oil drain pipe that was totally inaccessible was going to be a problem, out came the can of grease and I greased up the pipe both ends and the metal pipes, placed oil drain pipe onto block drain pipe then offered the turbo up to it. After trying several times to push the turbo down it decided to pop into position and then the intake hose was negotiated, this was pre greased and was a real bugger to get back on but done it eventually, bolted the new turbo down and re-fitted the oil supply and water hoses. Next came the downpipe, that bolted straight up no problem and all the work under the car was completed, the heatshield went back on then the intercooler, this was going to be my last and biggest problem, the turbo to intercooler pipe just did not want to got back on, after 15 mins off mucking around out came the kettle and good dose of boiling water saw the hose go nice and soft and popped straight on. topped up oil and water. Everything was bolted up and carefully checked, all the boost hoses were re-connected and it was time to fire her up Road test. strange amount of lag compared to the TD04 and spool was slow, got warmed up and had a play, boost came in very gently but with some force, the kick in the back was a lot harder and boost stayed hard until the limiter cut in This was on low boost 0.9 bar, switched up to high boost 1.2 bar and it spooled slightly quicker but when it got going at 3,000 rpm it carried on going, the speed it hit redline was a bit grin Got back home and smoke was billowing out of the bonnet scoop due to the burn off but nothing to worry about. Decided to go to helfrauds to get some hose clips and met up with a BMW 330i, he decided to give it the big one off the six cross roads much to my please, high boost was selected and the pedal hit the floor, to say I nearly rammed him was an understatement All in all it was a hard task and it will take me some time to get used to the lag but I think it was well worth the time money and effort, looking forward to the rolling road day now to see what the comparisons are Hope I haven't bored you too much AP

Very interesting read - don't think I'll ever do the same, sounds like the job is a bit of a bugger! :?
Enjoy the Big Boost; you've earned it |

Andy,
Be careful. Get your air/fuel ratio checked, and make sure it's not running lean! Easily checked at a rolling road, but make sure you ask them to check the emissions. Time for a Link, Power FC, PE Phase 2, Motec, etc, if you want to kill the lag! Trust me the difference was huge when I changed from the EVC4 to a Link, and it brought back all the low end torque. Enjoy!!

Update
Fitted new bajo oil feed bolt this morning, as you can see from the picture the VF series bolt on the left has a tiny bore compared to the TD04 one.
![]() The VF bolt also has a tiny filter inside to stop any tiny particles getting into the roller bearings in the turbo, Off to road test

No real difference as yet but I haven't done a decent drive in it, I always use the pug 206 at weekends.
It felt like the spool up was a tiny bit quicker but I still have lag to get sorted out. I need to get myself a link ecu or something similar, anyone know how much these things are supplied fitted and mapped? AP
